Many times I’m told by my clients they really want shutters! Who wouldn’t want shutters but are they the right application for your windows? Shutters or plantation shutters as they are called by many are a very beautiful window treatment that can bring style and class to your home.
Here in the Midwest our shutters have been a bit slow to catch on compared to the southern and coastal states. Maybe it’s because of the type of construction we have here. Home construction in the coastal states have a lot of sheet rocked wrapped windows with no trim and very deep windows 4 to 6 inches, this allows for many different styles of shutters and trims.
Here in Kansas it’s a little more of a challenge. New construction is easier to work with, most new homes have 2 x 6 walls which allows for all sorts of choices for trims, bigger sizes of louvers such as 3 1/2 inch and 4 inch louvers. Older homes is where it can get a bit tricky. Many times the only choice is to use an outside mount shutter sometimes covering outside trim to get the depth needed for your louvers to operate correctly. I’ve had instances that removing your old trim and replacing it with the trim of the shutter was the best application.
When thinking about shutters there are many variables to consider. What’s the depth of your window? Do you have anything that will obstruct your operation of louvers such as window cranks, window locks, screens etc.? If you have to go with an outside mount shutter do you have the room for it as it will stick out in your room 3 to 4 inches?
It’s really best to work with a professional who knows what to look for when thinking about making the investment into your home by adding shutters. I love working with my clients to find the perfect shutter for their home, the perfect size of louver, the perfect color, wood or composite we have it all at Made in the Shade. http://madeintheshadekansas.com
